Rehab & Skilled Care:  The Eden Alternative

Sycamore Court... Evergreen Street...Apple Blossom Way...They sound like nice neighborhood streets on which to live. They are, in fact, the names of a few of the "streets" in the Llanfair Living Center. No one wants to have a home on a "unit." People live in neighborhoods. At Llanfair, your address could be 28 Sycamore Court rather than Room 28 on the West Unit. Our skilled care unit is now "The Living Center." The supportive care unit for our Alzheimer's and dementia patients is now "The Grove." The East Wing is now "Eden Park."

This is part of the cultural change at Llanfair known as The Eden Alternative. Eden is a philosophy that advocates humanizing the skilled nursing environment as a way to combat the plagues of boredom, loneliness and helplessness found in most long term care facilities.

A community can provide top of the line medical treatment, yet miss the mark in creating a world of life, variety and companionship for the elders who live there. This philosophy includes many unconventional changes: residents are given daily exposure to dogs, cats and birds, and are encouraged to assist in the care of the animals; close and continuing contact between children and residents is provided through programs such as on-site child care, after-school activities and day campus; and live plants and flowers fill The Living Center.

Eden is about developing neighborhoods where people can grow as human beings. Companionship (both human and animal), opportunities to serve and give, variety and spontaneity -- these are the hallmarks of Eden neighborhoods and of Llanfair Retirement Community.
